18.099: Analysis I Tandem
Prereq: Participants must be enrolled in
18.100B Analysis I.
Units: 2-0-4.
Time and place: Wednesday 9-10 in 2-255 and Thursday
11-12 in 4-146.
Text: Walter Rudin: Principles of mathematical
analysis. Third edition., McGraw-Hill, 1976.
Grading: 50% on content and 50% on writing.
The main focus of the course is on developing writing proficiency in
mathematics. Assignments begin with weekly problems sets, where
participants are asked to write clear and precise proofs of specific
statements, and culminate towards the end of the semester in a
paper of at least 5 pages on a broader topic. The class meets as a
whole for one hour a week and in smaller groups for an additional hour
a week.

September 16.

September 23.

October 7.

Problem set 8 is optional.
The LaTeX source files of all the problem sets are now available by
following the links above. The command latex filename.tex
converts the TeX-file filename.tex to a dvi-file
filename.dvi; the command pdflatex filename.tex will
produce a pdf-file filename.pdf; the command dvips -o
filename.ps filename.dvi will convert a dvi-file to a Post Script
file.
